Tjalk

One of our more unusual appointments is the design for the full refurbishment of an old Dutch ‘Tjalk’ potato barge.

The starting point was nothing but a rusting hull. Two cabins, one with an en-suite are situated towards the bow with an additional bathroom. Within the raised portion of accommodation is the living and kitchen space as well as the internal steering position. A large external space is provided behind this with an external steering position.

Numerous studies were done on the size and positioning of the window openings to give a comfortable and balanced relationship with the traditional form of the hull. To do this the hull was completely modelled in 3D with the new portions tested and visualised to inform the design decisions.
